(May 23, 2008) – As the Women’s Premier Soccer
League (WPSL) ratchets up into full gear during
Memorial Day weekend, here is a scouting report
providing background on the league, how a few of
its teams have partnered with Women’s
Professional Soccer franchises and a quick
glance at some WPSL players to watch.
What is the WPSL?
The WPSL is an amateur, independent national
league that was founded in 1998. This summer
collegiate, former professional and
international players are competing on
50 WPSL teams
in
eight divisions.
While the
WPSL season
began two weeks ago, it kicks off in earnest
over Memorial Day weekend and runs through late
July with a league championship held the last
weekend in July.
How are WPS and its teams working with the
WPSL?
Two WPS teams have formed relationships with
WPSL teams in the Boston Breakers and the
Chicago franchise. The Breakers are affiliated
with
SoccerPlus CT, whose
head coach, Tony DiCicco, and assistant coach,
Lisa Cole, form Boston’s Women’s Professional
Soccer coaching staff. Chicago, meanwhile, has
partnered with the MYSC Lady Blues who are based
in Middleton, Wisc.
Who are some WPSL players to watch?
