You can go to

Disease is the number one killer of
women and the Go Red for Women
campaign is trying to build
awareness.
Tell us
what your grandmother means to you
how close are you, what lessons has
she taught you, why she is important
in your life.
Some people only see there
grandparents every few months or
weeks. My grandmother, Ruth, is a
person who has been involved in my
life for everything, graduations,
birthdays, 3rd grade chorus
concerts, and mostly anything you
can think of. She was the one who
taught me the importance of
education, always asking if I had my
homework done. I can remember one
day when I was very young, sitting
at her kitchen table, learning long
division with her. She always found
the way to keep us motivated for
doing well.
My three siblings and I are her
only grandchildren so she was always
on top of things. For the last 5
years or so, shortly after her heart
attack, she has been living at my
house with my parents. In college
she was always there every time I
when I came home, curious about how
my life has been going, especially
my soccer.
My whole life I have been
fortunate to have a grandmother so
involved and loving in my life. A
greeting from her when I walk in the
door, after a long day of work or a
drive home from Connecticut, simply
makes up for everything. In the
recent year her health has gotten
worse from old age, it teaches me to
enjoy my youth and value the time I
have with her. No matter what my
problems seem to be I still have my
grandmother.
How old was
she when she had her heart attack?
Does she have a family history of
heart disease, or have any risk
factors such as smoking, high
cholesterol, diabetes
My grandmother was in her early
80s when she had her heart attack.
I, at the time, was in college and
she was still living at her house on
her own. I don't know of any other
heart disease in my family, this has
been the only major incident. My
grandmother has always had a clean
sheet of heath and rarely ever went
to the doctors with even a simple
cold. The one factor that could have
effected her health and heart
problems was the fact that she
smoked.
What did
you learn from this experience? (ie:
how fragile life is, how you
should be aware of what your body
tells you, that women as well as men
suffer from heart disease
it is the # 1 killer of women, etc
I learned from experience how
important everyday with your friends
and family is, life is unpredictable
so make the most of what you have in
front of you.
My grandmothers heart attack was
frightening for my family but in the
end something great came from it. My
grandmother moved into the house and
I got to spend more time with her.
Thankfully my grandmother made a
full recovery and has had many
healthy and happy days since her
heart attack. It taught me to value
my time with my grandmother and
don't worry about the little things
because there are far more important
things to enjoy in life.
How
important is it to you to take care
of your health, and especially your
heart health? What role does soccer
play in this?
Take advantage of your youth and
health, its summer so get outside,
maybe go for a walk or kick around
with some friends. Enjoy your life
longer by exercising to strengthen
your heart; soccer is just one of
the great ways accomplish that.
Sports are not only an opportunity
to be with your friends it is also
away to exercise and have fun. All
the running in my soccer games and
practices is conditioning for my
heart, soccer is my health choice.
What
message do you have to other young
women about why they should "love
their heart"?
What you do today will either
benefit or put you at a higher risk
later on in life, choose healthy
options such as playing soccer over
playing video games. Your heart is
the center of everything, you need
to care for what you put into your
body, as well as exercising to keep
your heart healthy. Your heart needs
to be treated and trained just like
any other muscle in your body. "Love
your heart" to me means playing
soccer as long as I can.
